The new UnityPoint Pediatric Group is a two-physician clinic designed to be family and child friendly with a sense of whimsy. The bold curved ceiling shapes and accent walls engage the imagination of children while providing wayfinding to areas of family and patient interaction. Secondary paint colors are utilized to provide accents on key walls, and the maple wood finishes, subtle patterned carpet, and natural linoleum flooring accentuates the playful theme. Daylighting is a key component, and the skewed oval nurse station is located at the exterior wall to let natural light into the circulation core. Large animal murals are incorporated in the corridor as well as each exam room with “jungle”, “river’ and “sea” themes, coordinating with the interior color palette and positioned to encourage interaction with the family and ease the tension of a child’s doctor visit.
The project Design Team utilized an interactive three-dimensional design process with the physicians, staff, and administration which allows the clinical space configuration to incorporate state of the art technology and improve the doctor-child interaction. The design is soothing and entertaining and allows a child’s visit to be friendly and less intimidating.
