Rock Island YMCA and Watts-Midtown Branch Library

Our Design

The project is a unique Community Center that combines the wellness and fitness of body and mind by coupling new facilities for the YMCA and the Rock Island Public Library. The project consists of 34,000-sf interior renovation and 8,000-sf addition to the original Tri-City Jewish Center in Rock Island, Illinois, and designed collaborating with GRO Architects.

The former classrooms and synagogue of the center were converted into an open 4,500-sf branch library space and a 2,800-sf community room with theater seating. The east wall was opened to provide access to the new exterior terrace and reading garden. The rest of the building was renovated and expanded with a new storefront for the wellness center. Amenities include a 115-meter running track, child watch and play area, group exercise room, offices, and locker rooms for the YMCA. The existing commercial kitchen was maintained for meals to be prepared and delivered by the YMCA, and the lower-level gymnasium was restored to mint condition. The once segmented building now boasts an open floor plan and an overabundance of natural light to enhance fitness and wellness.
