Meet the President: Veronica Tolander

Following the recent leadership announcement, we spoke with Veronica Tolander about her background, leadership approach, and vision for the future of Studio 483 Architects.

Q: What drew you to Studio 483 Architects, and what made this opportunity the right fit for you?

A: Studio 483 has built a strong reputation for thoughtful design and lasting client relationships. What stood out to me was the firm’s collaborative culture and commitment to delivering work that truly serves its clients and communities. It was an opportunity to join a talented team with a solid foundation and help guide its next phase of growth.

Q: How have your experiences in both public and private sectors shaped your leadership approach in architecture?

A: My experience leading projects in both the public and private sectors has shaped a leadership approach that balances strategic alignment with practical delivery. In the public sector, working with multidisciplinary teams, complex systems, and high accountability reinforced the need for clear communication, efficiency, and thoughtful decision-making from early planning through long-term impact. In the private sector, I strengthened my ability to translate client priorities into actionable project solutions, leveraging technical expertise to guide design direction, provide technical oversight and quality assurance, and keep teams focused on constructability, code compliance, and long-term asset performance. Together, these experiences inform a leadership style grounded in collaboration, clarity, and delivering durable outcomes that meet both stakeholder expectations and operational realities.

Q: What are your top priorities as you step into the role of President?

A: My first priority is listening, so I can understand our team, our clients, and our partners. From there, I’m focused on supporting sustainable growth, strengthening internal operations, and continuing to build on the relationships that have made Studio 483 successful.

Q: Studio 483 is known for strong client relationships—how do you plan to build on that foundation?

A: That’s one of the firm’s greatest strengths. Maintaining trust and consistency is key, so clients can expect to continue working with the same team they know. At the same time, we’ll look for ways to enhance communication and bring even more value through our design and project delivery process.

Q: How do you see your role complementing Greg Gowey and Jeff Dismer as they continue their involvement?

A: Greg and Jeff have built an incredible legacy and strong client relationships. Their continued involvement ensures continuity in design leadership and client connections. My role is to complement that by focusing on strategic growth and operational leadership, so together we can support both stability and future opportunities.

Q: What excites you most about the future of the firm over the next few years?

A: I’m excited about the opportunity to grow thoughtfully. There’s a strong team in place and a respected reputation in the market. Building on that foundation while expanding our impact—both in the projects we take on and the communities we serve—is incredibly motivating.

Q: What should clients and partners expect from Studio 483 moving forward?

A: Clients can expect continuity first and foremost. Rest assured they will experience the same commitment to quality, and the same collaborative approach. What this transition adds is additional leadership support to help us grow and evolve while staying true to who we are.

Q: On a personal note, what motivates or inspires you in your work?

A: On a personal level, I’m inspired by the opportunity architecture provides to positively impact how people live, learn, and work. Thoughtful, efficient design, that reflects how people actually use a space can greatly improve the functionality and effectiveness of an operation without necessarily increasing project costs. I’m motivated by finding creative, practical solutions that truly meet each client’s needs, and I enjoy the challenge of solving complex design problems in ways that exceed expectations and add lasting value to every project.
